MN prosecutors obtain evidence from federal government tied to Pretti, Good investigations.
MINNEAPOLIS (GRAY) – Minnesota-based prosecutors say they’ve obtained a long list of evidence from federal investigators tied to several federal officer-involved-shootings that happened during this winter’s Operation Metro Surge.
The evidence, which contains statements, body camera footage, and physical evidence gathered by federal investigators, is tied to the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, as well as the shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis.
“We have also obtained some of the physical evidence that was previously withheld, including Renee Good’s car,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty on Monday, as she explained that much of the forensic evidence was being handled by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
The newly obtained evidence arrives months after the shootings took place during Operation Metro Surge, a targeted immigration operation that resulted in the deployment of thousands of federal agents across Minnesota.
Shortly after the shootings had occurred in January, state investigators said that they’d effectively been shut out of ongoing investigations into each of the shootings by federal investigators. The shuttered partnership was—according to state leaders—atypical and kept state prosecutors from accessing key forensic evidence at the time.
“It should never have taken this long for Minnesota law enforcement to gain access to the federal government’s evidence surrounding the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and the shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis,” said Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison in a statement, “My aim has always been to ensure justice is done, and this evidence-sharing is a positive development in that essential work.”
The new evidence will take time to parse through; the amount of body cam footage alone is “hours and hours” worth, according to Moriarty.
While the Hennepin County Attorney has issued charges related to the shooting of Sosa-Celis, they have yet to issue any related to Pretti and Good’s deaths.
Moriarty said the newly obtained evidence gives them more information to consider and that they’ll want to go through the “voluminous” amount of evidence before levelling any charges.
“We will be thorough. We will be complete, and we will make a decision. We will be very public about that. The wonderful thing now is we have all the evidence,” she said.
