Flying a flag in support of Ukraine
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Ukraine became an independent country in 1991 and since then, the country’s flag has been a symbol of freedom.
Now, as Russia invades Ukraine, the Ukrainian flag is being flown by people around the world in support and solidarity.
If you are looking to get your hands on a Ukrainian flag, you might have to wait a little bit.
As of Monday, Herold Flags in Rochester is sold out, but another shipment should be arriving later in the week.
Lee Herold, owner of Herold Flags, has been outfitting Rochester and the surrounding area with flags of all shapes, sizes and nationalities since 1992.
“In the 20th Century and 21st Century, they are more important than ever,” Herold said. “It represents all of the people and the flag embodies everything in a culture, all put together.”
In the case of Ukraine, it’s flag symbolizes independence.
“Knowing that there is someone else there and there’s a symbol above you, that’s showing you there’s hope and strength,” Herold said. “It makes all the difference.”
As people around the world display the Ukrainian flag, it’s now a symbol of hope and solidarity.
“I think, like a lot of people, we feel kind of helpless,” retired Lourdes Modern European History and Political Science teacher Rich Decker said. “We feel a lot of empathy for those people. And so I just thought it would be important at least for my family and I, and maybe our neighbors, to see the Ukrainian flag up for a while.”
Decker says once he gets his Ukrainian flag, he plans to leave it on his flag pole until the invasion is over and some normalcy has returned to the people of Ukraine.
“Hopefully remind people that there are people suffering and we need some empathy and understanding on what’s going on,” Decker said. “The flag is a great symbol of what you and I believe in.”
The Ukrainian flag is equal parts of blue and yellow. The blue represents the sky and water, whereas the yellow represents wheat; a major crop in the country.
