ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Fire crews were called to the Woodridge Apartments in Southwest Rochester Thursday night for the report of a fire. Crews arrived at 6:58 p.m.

One person was transported to Mayo St. Mary’s with injuries. The person was inside the room that started on fire. The door was locked and firefighters had to force the door open. Once inside, crews encountered heavy smoke. A victim was located just inside the door. Crews pulled the victim from the apartment and carried her to the ground floor, where she was transferred to Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Others who were forced to leave the building were later let back in.

The fire started in a kitchen on the second floor. The person who was taken to the hospital was in that apartment.

“The good news on this one is the smoke detector sounded and the sprinkler system activated. Having the sprinkler system there kept this fire in check,” Rochester Fire Department Captain Brett Knapp said.

The apartment where the fire originated suffered a lot of damage. There was minimal damage to any other unit.

The State Fire Marshal will continue the investigation.
