Snowfall brings sloppy conditions to the area today; a little more snow will be possible over the weekend

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – A snowy start to the weekend

A potent storm system is moving through the region today, bringing accumulating snow to the entire area for our Friday. Expect periods of snow throughout the day with two to four inches of accumulation in Rochester and slightly lighter amounts to the east along the Mississippi River. The heaviest snowfall will be to the west, especially along and west of Interstate 35 where six or more inches may accumulate. Temperatures will slowly drop off from the 20s to the upper teens by the afternoon hours with an increasingly brisk easterly breeze that will reach 20 to 25 miles per hour at times. Wind chill levels will be in the teens, then single digits today.

Light snow will taper off late in the evening and our cloud cover will gradually clear off after midnight. Temperatures will fall to the single digits above zero while east winds remain a bit brisk, giving us wind chill values slightly below zero.

High pressure will settle in from the prairies of central Canada, bringing abundant sunshine for our Saturday. High temperatures will only be in the mid-teens despite the sunny conditions and a light northeast breeze will give us wind chills around zero for most of the day.

A disturbance will bring a chance of snow showers to the area for Sunday with a minor coating of less than an inch of accumulation possible during the afternoon hours. High temperatures will be in the mid-20s with brisk southwest winds keeping wind chills in the teens.

After we enjoy a limited amount of sunshine on Monday and high temperatures in the upper 20s, we’ll have even warmer readings on Tuesday, but there will be a chance of light afternoon snow. Expect less than an inch of accumulation with high temperatures in the lower 30s.

Colder air will pour into the region for the remainder of next week. We’ll have plenty of sunshine next Wednesday and Thursday, but high temperatures will only be in the single digits, and lows will be subzero. There will be another chance for some light snow developing late next Friday before temperatures possibly get even colder for the following weekend.
