ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The Winona State Warriors introduced their new head football coach today. Brian Bergstrom comes over from South Dakota State University where he served as the team’s defensive coordinator. He is a Minnesota native, and he’s excited to be the next head coach here in Warrior-land.

“It’s been a life-long dream, really,” said Bergstrom. “Football has been one of the most important things in my life, beyond my faith and my family. To have the honor of being the head football coach at Winona State is a dream come true, really.”

Bergstrom comes to Winona with bona fide credentials. He has spent the last four years coordinating at SDSU. It’s an aggressive hire for a D2 school to poach a D1 coordinator, but Winona State’s decision makers say says Bergstrom is the perfect man for the job.

“When you talk to people about Brian, the first word to come out of people’s mouths is ‘great.’ Whether it’s great man, great communicator, great coach,” said WSU Athletic Director Eric Schoh.

“No question Brian is the right guy to be the next head coach at Winona State,” said school president Dr. Scott Olson. “He has ethics and integrity. He gets what we’re trying to be as a university. He’s got those Division II values that you’re a student and an athlete. Oh, and by the way, he knows how to win.”

Bergstrom is ready to put his stamp on the Winona State Warriors’ football program. He says his program will be built on three pillars.

“We’re going to be built on a few things, and I would hope my life models this. We’re going to be built on grit, growth, and team,” Bergstrom said. “That’s my identity. I believe grit is an endurance. It’s a perseverance. It’s a toughness. It’s a no quit attitude. And that’s one of the greatest traits you can have in live.”

Bergstrom will replace long-time head coach Tom Saywer, who retired after coaching for 25 seasons at Winona State.
