AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) – Starting at 2 p.m. Thursday, 20-30 protesters started gathering in Austin. Group organizers say they are gathering, demanding justice for Kouko ‘Christopher’ Fiafonou. He is the 38-year-old man who was shot and killed by police on December 23 after a more than 24-hour standoff at his home. The Austin Police Department says he had a weapon and was confronting officers.

This is what Austin Police Chief David McKichan said the day of the shooting:

“At approximately 9:30 pm, the male exited the apartment complex and walked to the Kwik Trip gas station located in the 1200 block of Oakland Avenue W., followed by officers. In the parking lot of the gas station, the male armed with a knife, confronted those officers. At one point, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the male.”

Protesters say they are upset with how police handled the situation. They say officers destroyed his family’s home, and they want to see all footage of the incident. They also demand police involved be fired and prosecuted as well as Christopher’s family be compensated for their losses.

The rally is outside the Austin Police Department.

Members of Christopher’s family are in attendance.

This is the latest response from the Austin Police Department:

Last Thursday our agency had one of our officers use deadly force during an encounter. I understand the gravity of that...
