Area pharmacies busy administering COVID-19 boosters
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Pharmacies are a busy place with people getting flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, and now, many are getting booster shots.
Many locations are requiring people to get appointments ahead of time and we’re learning there is big interest for the booster dose.
Both Hy-Vee pharmacy and Hunt’s Drug say they are seeing a significant increase of people in their pharmacies.
“Before even pharmacies were opening, people were calling, trying to find out if they could go ahead and schedule,” Hy-Vee Assistant Vice President of Communications Christina Gayman said.
Everyone over the age of 18 is now eligible to get booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, six months after getting the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna and two months after the initial dose of Johnson & Johnson.
“We’re getting calls every day,” Hunt’s Drug Pharmacist Phil Hommerding said. “We’ve got probably 20 or 30 appointments coming in today. We’ve got a lot of facilities in the area that are looking to get their patients vaccinated as well.”
Hy-Vee is offering COVID-19 boosters at all of its locations and offers patients all three vaccine brands: Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.
Hunt’s Drug offers both Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.
“It’s a little bit more manageable than the original rollout because there were so many people that were so excited about getting it and trying to divvy out where the shots were going,” Hommerding said. “The supply wasn’t there originally and now the supply doesn’t seem to be an issue, so it’s a little easier and we’re more effective at getting the shots out there.”
Both pharmacies are asking patients to schedule appointments ahead of time; Hy-Vee via online and Hunt’s Drug by phone.
“We just encourage people to go to hyvee.com/covidvaccine, go to our scheduler and they can select which manufacture they’re looking for before they ever sign up so they can see which locations have which manufactures,” Gayman said.
If you are looking to get a pediatric COVID-19 vaccine, Hunt’s Drug is not currently carrying that vaccine, but Hy-Vee is.
“We actually have specific stores or specific pharmacy locations in each of our markets that are designated as pediatric vaccine hubs,” Gayman said. “And so we are only giving pediatric Pfizer, which is the 5-11, on certain days and timeframes each week. They are appointment only also.”
Hy-Vee says it will not be administering any other vaccine when pediatric vaccines are being given.
Also, a reminder for adults, you are able to get their COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot at the same visit.
