CHATFIELD (KTTC-DT) -- Chatfield wrestler Jon Farnell often joked with his coach about whether or not he was the best heavyweight in school history.
"He's asked me through his junior year and all this year, and I know he'll remember asking me, 'Am I the best heavyweight that you've ever had?' said Chatfield coach Joel Viss. "And we have had a really good heavyweight, a guy by the name of Travis Bray placed third in the state and got a lot of wins and I said, 'Jon, if you can place third or higher I guess you'd be the best heavyweight we've ever had.'"
With that in mind, Farnell's plan was simple.
"I said I'm not getting stuck this year," said Farnell. "That's the one thing I didn't want to do. I hate getting pinned."
His plan worked and no one was able to pin him all year.
"Jon doesn't like to lose and he loves to win, so that makes him a pretty good candidate to do well," said coach Viss.
And he did do well - going a perfect 42-0 to win the Class A heavyweight state title.
"I couldn't have done anything better," said Farnell. "I mean kids get sad at the end of their high school wrestling career - I am a little sad I'm done wrestling high school - but it couldn't have ended any other way. Everything went according to plan."
For going a perfect 42-0 and winning a state title, Chatfield's Jon Farnell is the KTTC NewsCenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
