Go Red For Women

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-TV) -- People across the nation are supporting the fight against heart disease by wearing red Friday.

Minnesota leaders, health officials, heart disease survivors and supporters lined the steps inside Mayo Clinic's Gonda building this afternoon.

Sadly, heart disease is the number one killer of women.

According to the American Heart Association, 80 percent of women ages 40 to 60 have one or more risk factor for heart disease.

But, it's never too late to take action and control of your health.

Director of Mayo's Women's Heart Clinic Dr. Sharonne Hayes says, "Make simple choices every day. Choose to walk instead of the elevator, take the stairs. Choose an apple, not a bag of chips."

Minnesota First Lady Mary Pawlenty says, "Reducing our stress. This is a very stressful time in our nation's history. Teaching women the importance of being good to themselves is very important, so my hope is women will be thoughtful about that."
