Winona State goes smoke free Monday

WINONA, MN (FOX 47) -- Winona State University is trying to clean up the campus, by cracking down on smokers. And a campus ban will be in affect sooner than you think.

Sooner than later - because the ban goes into effect on Monday.

There will be no smoking or tobacco use of any kind allowed anywhere within campus boundaries, both indoors or outdoors.

Signs will be on buildings to help remind those on campus.

The ban is toughening WSU's 2002 policy that kept smokers at least 25 feet from school buildings.

Officials say smokers only make up seven percent of its population - students even voted two to one in favor of this new ban.

Smokers will be able to smoke on campus if they are in their cars; however, officials say penalties for smoking on campus will be handed down verbally.

Winona State will be the second state campus to go smoke-free.

Minnesota State University in Moorhead instituted a tobacco-free campus last January.
