Minnesota's unemployment insurance hours extended

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- State officials say they're expanding the hours in which Minnesotans can apply for unemployment insurance online.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says the self-service system on the Internet will be open the next four Sundays.

The system is usually closed on weekends for maintenance, but Minnesotans seeking unemployment benefits will be able to apply between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. this Sunday as well as Jan. 4th, 11th, and 18 in addition to weekdays.

DEED Commissioner Dan McElroy says the state's Unemployment Insurance Program is busier than normal in part because of the economic downturn.
