Drive-by shooting in NW Rochester hurts one

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- As 2008 winds down, the number of violent crimes have increased in Rochester.

In fact, a record number of homicides, gang shootings, and stabbings have gone up by 14 percent this year.

Rochester police are investigating a drive-by shooing that happened early Saturday morning.

Police say, several bullets were fired into a northwest Rochester home around midnight.

A 20-year old man was struck in the hand during the shooting that happened on the corner of 48th Street and 18th Avenue Northwest.

The man was sitting in the living room when the bullet struck him.

Other people were inside for a gathering, but no one else was injured.

Police say, this was not a random drive-by shooting.

Police Sgt. Craig Anderson says, "It's probably not a random thing, it's possible that it could be, but I would think that right now they just gotta poor through the reports, re-interview everybody that was there and try to figure out if there's any reason they would have been targeted and go from there."

Police say it's not clear how many bullets were fired.

But the gunfire was clearly directed at the home because bullet marks were left on its exterior.

Officers say the shooting is likely gang related.

The man shot in the hand was taken to a local hospital.

No word on his condition.
