The search for the perfect fir

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- Along with snow, Christmas trees are a staple this time of year.  We caught up with a local family on the hunt for the perfect tree. They say the holidays wouldn't be same without it.

"This is it. ‘Tis the Season, right now," said Doug Dose, the owner of the Choose and Cut Fraser Firs in northeast Rochester.

It's the time of year for cold, snow and of course, cutting down that Christmas tree.

"We have a lot of return business; most of our business is return people. But families have established a tradition of cutting a tree every year," said Dose.

And that's just the case for the Petersohns of Dodge Center.

"There's so many to choose from. We just went up to that one and grandma liked it and then the kids liked it too," said Tracy Petersohn.

But this year the Petersohns are changing their tradition slightly.

"Previous years we've gotten a bigger tree and they had to take a chainsaw out and cut it down because they were pretty big. But this year we decided to downsize and then we could cut down the tree ourselves," said Petersohn.

Downsizing in a recession, but owner of Choose and Cut Fraser Firs Doug Dose says they're doing just fine.

"I think people are going back to traditions, they're trying to establish traditions," said Dose.

And in the artificial vs. real argument, the Petersohns say there's one reason they'll always choose real.

"We're hoping sometime we'll get a squirrel to jump out of it when we get it home," said Petersohn.

Choose and Cut is located in northeast Rochester off of Highway 63.
