Rochester school pushes for laptops for students

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- A Rochester school is looking to supply its sixth through eighth graders with laptops.

Lincoln K-8 Choice School in southeast Rochester is raising money so that they can purchase laptop computers for each student.

It's a project that's part of their technology initiative - working to implement technology in every grade level.

The school will not be using district money, but will be raising it through fundraisers and grants, to make the goal.

Jim Sonju, Lincoln K-8 Choice School Principal, says, "It's kind of a different way of educating. The students would have the laptops in front of them. They actually could take them home, access things online. They could download PowerPoint projects teachers could send to students and the students could send it right to their teacher's inbox. So you're getting rid of outdated textbooks."

The school hopes to raise about $50,000.

On Saturday, students will be putting on a concert at University Square at 2:00 p.m. to raise money for the initiative.
