More families turn to Channel One for food help

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- Channel One Food Bank and Food Shelf is busier than ever before, and with the holidays in full swing, more families are forced to turn to them for help.

Channel One Food Bank and Food Shelf sees about 3,500 visits to their food shelf every month, and many families rely on them for help.

Tim Kruger along with his kids Clinton and Sophia visit Channel One every month.

Tim says, "My wife stays home with the kids and with just me working it's kind of hard."

Kruger says financially, his family is struggling more than just a year ago and there's even more of a strain with the holidays coming up.

Tim says, "It's something we have to do."

And now that need has increased for other families in the area.

Thousands of families visit Channel One every month, but in just the last year they've seen 200 new households come through every month.

Channel One Executive Director Cynthia Shaffer says, "The food we provide here really does bring them through the tough times."

Shaffer says this time of year is especially difficult for families because more children are at home for Christmas break.

"This is a very stressful time of year for folks and to be able to take a little stress off their shoulders helps," Shaffer says.

This weekend you will have a chance to help Channel One.

Canadian Pacific Railroad's Holiday Train will be in Rochester for the first time this Sunday.

The train will pull in behind Barlow Plaza at 5:30 p.m.

Admission to the event is free, but donations of cash and non-perishable food items are encouraged.
