Officials remind folks of thin ice hazards

ST. PAUL, MN (FOX 47) -- It hasn't been that cold in Minnesota - yet.

That's why authorities are asking you to be wary of thin ice on rivers, ponds, and lakes.

Parents should be especially careful with young children, because most fatal ice accidents involve youngsters.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says no ice in Minnesota is consistently four inches thick. In order to safely walk on the ice, that is the minimum thickness required.

Authorities also say owners should make sure to keep dogs on a leash to prevent them from venturing onto unsafe ice.
