Churches urge politicians to act in Postville

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Representatives of 20 churches have written a letter urging politicians to take action in Postville, where they say a humanitarian crisis is under way.

The letter, from 20 churches in Postville and Decorah, was sent Tuesday to political leaders including Gov. Chet Culver, U.S. Sens. Tom Harkin and Charles Grassley, and U.S. Reps. Bruce Braley and Tom Latham.

The groups say that they've been trying to assist hundreds of workers who have been affected by a May 12 immigration raid at the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Postville. They also say that the company's financial problems have led to workers being left homeless and without pay.

The letter requests that political leaders assess the situation and offer government help.
