Post-Bulletin won't sponsor 2009 fireworks

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-TV) -- It's yet another sign of the times.  More cuts are being made at the Post Bulletin.  This time it's not jobs, but a Rochester tradition.

Many Rochester residents spend 4th of July at Silver Lake Park.

Some listen to music or picnic, but all come for the entertainment later in the day, the fireworks.

Monday, the Rochester Post-Bulletin Charities announced that they will no longer be sponsoring the annual fireworks show.

For more than 40 years the Post-Bulletin has sponsored the display.

Mayor Ardell Brede says he's very appreciative of the Post Bulletin Charities for their dedication to the show.

Brede said that the Post-Bulletin told him about the cut in a meeting this morning.

He said the Post-Bulletin has passed the task of finding funding for this year's fireworks on to him, as mayor.

Brede said he will begin to find companies or organizations that will be willing to step up and fund this year's display, which according to him costs about $25,000 dollars with insurance.

"It would be very disappointing if we weren't able to do it. But at the same time, I'm being realistic that some of the businesses that you might think of in the past, could they help, their heart would be in it but their checkbook might say not this year," said Brede.

The task of funding will not be going to the city.

Brede says their budget is already tight enough.  And as is many other companies during these difficult times.

So the task may be a big one for Mayor Brede.

The Post-Bulletin has offered up their firework hardware to be used in the display.
