Prep your car now before winter hits

AUSTIN, MN (FOX 47) -- We haven't had a big snowfall, yet, but it's never too early to prepare your car for the cold winter weather.

You always hope it doesn't happen to you - your car breaks down in the middle of winter, and you don't have a blanket and your cell phone doesn't work.

Riverland Community College in Austin decided to be proactive and educate their students on proper car care maintenance.

Each year, hundreds of Minnesotans find themselves stranded on the roadside.

Riverland Community College in Austin is doing everything they can to prep students for winter driving.

Jason Merritt, an Automotive Instructor, says, "One area that I tell people not to skimp on, especially in this area with snow and ice, is tires.

Merritt says when your tires are worn, they're worn! And you shouldn't be driving on old tires during a Minnesota winter.

Merritt took the students into the school's auto body shop where they learned how to check tire pressure and proper wiper blade maintenance.

Kris Mullord, the Activities Director, says, "You want something very brightly colored to put on top of your car for identification purposes."

A winter driving safety kit was also given to the students.

"Simply putting this little mask over your face is going to help protect your lungs if you have to walk anywhere."

Students were reminded to always bundle up, and to carry extra clothes and blankets.

Some of the items in the safety kit included a garbage bag, caution tape, and some snacks. Instructors say, however, that this is only the start of a winter kit.

You should have blankets, snow pants, candles - and most importantly, get your car checked by a mechanic, Make sure everything is running the way it should.
