A could-be new home for Triton Middle School

WEST CONCORD, MN (FOX 47) -- An area school district is looking at making a big change.  The Triton School Board is holding a public hearing tonight regarding the closing of the Triton Middle School in West Concord, but some area residents don't want to see the school leave.

In a town of about 800 people, West Concord has relied on their school to draw in new families, but now that school might be moving.

Dennis Wilson says, "It's kind of a tough thing to swallow for a town like this."

Dennis Wilson has lived in West Concord for 22 years. He went to Triton Middle School himself and doesn't want it to leave.

"The town really has nothing going for it the way it is - if they lose that, I can't see any other families wanting to move here," says Wilson.

The Triton School District wants to move the current middle school to Dodge Center and combine the high school, middle school and elementary school into one. They say it will save them money in the end.

Mary Burt says, "I just worry about our town."

Mary Burt serves on the West Concord City Council and says one of her biggest concerns is that the town has had little say in the decision. She says many people are concerned and would rather see the town grow.

"If a small town doesn't have a school, what does it have to offer?" says Burt.

Burt says she moved to the town specifically because of the school.

"It's a concern for all of us, like I said it's going to hurt the town."

School officials say they aren't sure what will happen to the building if the school is moved to Dodge Center, but many West Concord residents are keeping their fingers crossed that the building will continue to be put to good use.

Some concerned residents say the new facility would be considerably smaller than the current middle school and does not provide adequate space for things like band, choir and physical education.
