Operation Christmas Child begins

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- As you make that holiday list and check it twice, there's an opportunity to pick up some special gifts for a child in need halfway around the world.

Collection week for Operation Christmas Child kicks off Monday.

Since 1993, more than 61 million shoeboxes have been packed and delivered to children all over the world.

The shoeboxes are delivered to children in over 90 countries.

They are filled with a variety of items including school supplies, toys and hygiene items, and for many children, it's the first gift they've ever received.

Gwen Carlson, with Operation Christmas Child, "They're living in countries that are suffering from war, and poverty, and natural disasters and disease, and a simple shoebox brings them joy and hope."

The national collection week runs from November 17th through the 24th.

The Rochester collection center is located at the Calvary Evangelical Free Church.
