Hunters hope for better luck this weekend

Posted: Updated:

ST. PAUL, MN (FOX 47) -- Deer hunters are hoping for better luck this weekend after a slow start on last Saturday's opener.

In northeastern Minnesota, DNR wildlife officials say harvest was down 20 percent in the first three days compared to last season.

The windy conditions may have kept the deer from moving around.

This weekend's hunt should give the DNR a better idea about why the deer kill was down by 15 percent statewide during the opener.

DNR officials also say they are overwhelmed with reports of illegal deer baiting.

It's even hit a new high again this year.

According to the DNR's weekly Conservation Officer report, 11 hunters have been cited for baiting, nine of them on opening day.

Last fall, the agency's officers wrote 82 citations to hunters.

Minnesota's firearms deer season continues through November 23.
