Family's dog fatally shot in their front yard

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- A Rochester family is grieving over the loss of their basset hound.  The owners say the dog was shot right in their front yard after they let the dog outside.

Jason Horsman and Kayla Jensen say their five-year-old basset hound, Amara, was like a child to them.

Jensen says, "She was such a good girl and for somebody to just shoot her outside, five feet from our house it just astonishes me, you know."

The two said they heard what sounded like gunshots a little after six o' clock on Monday night and when they got outside found that Amara had been shot. They tried to bring her to the vet, but it was too late.

Horsman says, "She was still alive, she looked like she was going to make it because she was still walking and she just died in the vehicle on the way."

The two are not only grieving the loss of their pet, but are also scared for their safety.

Jason said he found Amara lying just feet from their front door.

"I was scared I thought someone might still have a gun, somebody out to get us or something," says Horsman.

The two adopted Amara from a local shelter and said she was friendly and rarely bothered anyone.

"I know some people they don't have a pet, they don't understand but Amara was like a person to us."

Now the two hope to find who did this because, in their words, they weren't ready to say goodbye.

If you have any information you are asked to call the FOX 47 Safe City Tip Line.

That number is (507) 328-6888.

The family says they are also willing to offer a cash reward to anyone with information.
