New bishop for Winona diocese

WINONA, Minn. (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI has named Auxiliary Bishop John Quinn of Detroit as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Winona, Minnesota.

The 62-year-old Quinn will serve with, and then succeed, Bishop Bernard Harrington, who submitted his request for retirement to the Vatican when he turned 75 last month.

Harrington also came to Winona from the Archdiocese of Detroit. He served as an auxiliary bishop for four years before he was named Bishop of Winona in 1998.

The Winona diocese is comprised of 20 counties across the southern tier of Minnesota. It counts 148,400 Catholics, 79 active priests, 115 parishes, 33 schools, one seminary and one Catholic university.

Quinn's installation is planned for Dec. 11 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona.
