Water line break in Cresco, boil water advisory in effect

Cresco, IA (FOX 47) -- Residents in Cresco should boil water before drinking or cooking with it because of a water line break Wednesday morning.

The city is repairing the water main, will flush the lines and collect bacteria examples and additonal flushing may be needed.   The advisory is a precaution until bacteria sample results are back.

Classes were canceled Wednesday for all Howard-Winneshiek Schools as well as at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC).

Instructions for boiling water before use:

Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using. Only boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice.  Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the watter.  The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes.

For more information, please contact the city at 563-547-3910.

General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline by clicking here or calling 1-800-426-4791.
