Local animal control shelter under quarantine

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-TV) -- The Rochester Animal Control Shelter is under quarantine until next Tuesday following the death of four dogs.  Animal Control officials say the animals contracted parvovirus, a highly contagious and deadly virus.

last Thursday one animal control official found one animal dead and another on Saturday.

A Stool sample was taken and revealed the animals had Parvovirus.

Parvovirus attacks the intestinal system of dogs.

Some of the symptoms to look for include vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.

The good news is that vaccinated dogs are protected from the virus.

Dr. Jennifer Watson with Cascade Animal Medical Center says, "Because of the vaccine development and animals are up to date on their vaccines it's a completely preventable disease. As long as our animals are on appropriate vaccine schedules it isn't common in our vaccinated animals."

Two other dogs who contracted the virus had to be euthanized.

All of the other animals in the shelter have been vaccinated.
