With officers busy, U drinking tickets drop

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The first two weeks of school at the University of Minnesota were either a good time or a bad time for underage drinking, depending on your perspective.

The Minnesota Daily reports that underage drinking citations went from 76 during last year's first two weeks of school, to a grand total of eight so far this year.

Typically, police crack down on underage drinking as school starts. They hope to head off new students who undertake often dangerous tests of their own personal consumption limits.

But this year, university and Minneapolis police officers weren't able to run their usual party patrols -- because so many of their man-hours were transferred to providing security during the Republican National Convention.
