Tommy's party

EYOTA, MN (FOX 47) -- One local community is doing their part to "Stand Up For Cancer" as they rally around a four-year-old boy who's had cancer three times in his young life.

It's a big amount of preparation for such a small boy.

But Danny Brown of Eyota, who's outside doing the cooking for dinner says it's important.

"Bring awareness to cancer and itself and then to help out the family," said Brown.

But a small boy who has faced some big challenges in his life. He's faced cancer just three times in his four years.

"I love a little boy who's been sick three out of his four years and that's not okay with me," said Tommy's friend Jackie Jensen.

Jackie Jensen first met Tommy Thompson and his family at the Mayo Clinic pediatric center.

"Lots of kids up there. Lots of sick kids. I loved everyone of them. I hugged as many as I could. But there was something about Tommy," said Jensen.

And after Tommy's many visits to the Mayo Clinic, Jackie and Tommy formed a bond. But as Jackie got closer to the Thompson's she said she saw a need, "A benefit would suffice and go so far. And the financial, definitely, definitely they need but I saw a bigger need then that I saw a huge need for emotional support."

So Jackie made Tommy's Benefit a personal mission. She hopes the benefit will ease the pain of cancer, by bringing a community together.

"Hopefully at the end of this day, not just Tommy's family, but every single family. I mean receiving is great but once people have an opportunity to give, not just the money for donations, not just their hugs and the well wishes but when people have the opportunity to give themselves, they'll all go home and feel better too," said Jensen.
