Welcoming Week in Austin begins with focus on immigrant-owned business

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -

It's Welcoming Week in Austin!

SPAM town USA is celebrating its third annual Welcoming Week,  a celebration to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone.  Friday at the Hormel Home, Welcoming Week saw a discussion on immigrant entrepreneurs.

Mary Ann Quiroz immigrated to the United States from the Philippines about 30 years ago.  As one of the presenters of Friday's discussion, she knows a thing or two about immigrants and business.

"Intersectional work fosters abundance that it's good to take healthy risks, especially in business and in life in general," Quiroz says, "And to create collaborations and partnerships that will really help uplift and build their work."

As Austin continues to welcome in more immigrants, the business they bring in has become noticeable.

"I think it's a myth that when we say that we do it all alone, we're actually, we're rodded into this world with a family or a community," Quiroz adds, "So to launch anything, we don't do it alone."

Austin was one of the first places in Minnesota to join the Welcoming America coalition of cities.
