Mayo Clinic announced Friday that Dr. Gianrico Farrugia will be the next President/CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System.

Dr. Farrugia is a current Mayo Vice President and he serves as CEO at the Jacksonville, Florida campus.

“I am humbled and proud to follow and build upon this success with the best staff in the world,” says Dr. Farrugia. “While sea change continues to sweep through health care, I look forward to harnessing innovation, a hallmark of Mayo Clinic, to transform health care for the benefit of patients everywhere.”

According to a Mayo Clinic press release, he began that role in January 2015.

He has about 30 years of experience working within Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Farrugia has worked as a physician in Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, and in the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering in Rochester.

He is following in the footsteps of current Mayo President/CEO Dr. John Noseworthy who announced in February that he intended to retire.

“Dr. Farrugia is a visionary and servant leader who brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge - both as an innovator and an executive,” says Dr. Noseworthy

Dr. Noseworthy agreed to stay on through the end of 2018 at the request of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees.

Dr. Noseworthy has been with Mayo 28 years. Nine of those years have been in this top job.
