Throwback Thursday: Rochester flood destruction from the sky

This aerial photograph taken by the St. Paul District of the Army Corps of Engineers on July 6, 1978, shows the devastating impact of a torrential storm that dumped six inches of rain on Rochester in a six-hour period. 

It's a part of the History Center of Olmsted County's extensive photo archives. 

Forty years on, this flood is still considered the worst in the city's history, resulting in $60 million in damage and five deaths. It also led to a significant flood control project that was finally completed in the mid-1990s, a project intended to spare the city from similar flood events in the future.
