Throwback Thursday: a Patriotic Flag Day in Rochester

(KTTC) -

On June 14, Flag Day is celebrated across the US to commemorate the adoption of the US flag on June 14, 1777.

In 1943, the commemoration was marked in Rochester with a parade through the business district to Mayo Park. Shown here in this photo from the History Center of Olmsted County are the leaders of the parade, flag bearer LaVina Mellor and color guard Eileen Mayhew.

Following the parade was a program of speakers who highlighted the flag's significance as a symbol of patriotism and a reminder of that for which the US stands and fights. And at that time, the fighting was all too real, and making headlines every day.
