Eyota, Minn. resident battles stage 3 colorectal cancer

EYOTA, Minn. (KTTC) -

About 15 million people are living with cancer is the United States, and Amanda Brandt of Eyota is one of them.

The motorcycle enthusiast, pet lover, and office assistant was blind-sided by the news last July that she has stage 3 colorectal cancer.

"The hardest part is just the C word," said Amanda Brandt. "Being told you have cancer."

It put the 31-year-old's life of watching movies and listening to live music on hold. The diagnosis added ongoing visits to the hospital for CT scans, MRIs, colonoscopies, and other treatments.

"If it wasn't for my dad being there, I'd be a mess. My dad has been there for me every step of the way," she said.

Despite the challenges that come with fighting cancer Brandt says she looks at life from a different perspective now and credits her friends and family for giving a boost to her wavering self-esteem.

A benefit at American Legion in Eyota on Saturday is set up to help with her medical expenses from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. It'll have food, a silent auction, a DJ and motorcycle rides.

"I absolutely love riding motorcycles! There is nothing better than having the wind hit your face, and your hair, and the sound of the motorcycle, and being with a group that loves riding as well," said Brandt.

Brandt had her dream motorcycle — a Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider — a few years ago.

"Chemo took a lot out of me, and then my dad got sick, and so we had to sell the bike," she said.

Amanda is due for another surgery next month that will force her to take work off for two months.

That procedure will eliminate the need for a colostomy bag she's currently using.

Amanda has a GoFundMe and an account set up under "Benefit for Amanda Brandt" at Sterling State Bank. All donations will go towards medical bills.
