Throwback Thursday: a new school rises during an uncertain time

On May 18, 1941, the cornerstone of Lourdes High School on West Center Street was laid. Church officials presided over the ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of people.

The fourth degree Knights of Columbus, shown here, were also present. The US had yet to enter World War II, but the shadow of the war could be felt, as evidenced by the reporting of the event in the Post Bulletin.

Many of the speeches that day stressed the need for a Christian education at a time when, as one speaker put it, "Many of the things which humanity has worked for, aspired to and venerated throughout the centuries seem doomed. Indeed, thoughtful men fear for the very existence of Western civilization; they see it slowly and gradually crumbling away."
