Wisconsin town to host "Freeze Your Butt Off" Fishing Tournament Saturday

An annual fishing event taking place Saturday in Wisconsin has a very fitting name: the" Freeze Your Butt Off" fishing tournament.

It's the first open water tournament of the year and just five minutes from Red Wing. "It's a kickoff to the walleye run on the river. There's going to be fishing specifically for walleyes," said Kevin Hodgson with Everts Resort, the company hosting the tournament.

As of Friday afternoon they had 75 boats signed up with two anglers allowed per vessel. Hodgson says the walleye fishing on the Mississippi River is world class, with 10-pound walleyes caught regularly at Everts Resort.

One person who was out on the river a day before the competition was Rochester resident Christopher Smith and his chocolate lab, Bella. "It's the perfect day to get out here. I think we're going to get spoiled." Earlier in the week he caught three 90-pound fish near the dam with a fishing buddy.

We asked him what keeps him coming back to this particular fishing spot. His answer? The food. "We like to eat some walleyes. We like to travel around... it gets that itch to go away until summer is here."

Smith explained his technique for catching saugers 70 feet below water. "Just kind of a slow drag, slow lift, and slow set. I rely on my electronics a lot to see where the fish are and I'll kinda go from there."

The "Freeze Your Butt Off" Fishing Tournament runs from 7am to 3pm Saturday, March 3, at Everts Resort.
