Kidney stone cases up, especially in women

(KTTC) -

Researchers at Mayo Clinic say they are finding a steady increase in painful kidney stones, especially in women.

They were able to reach this conclusion, in part, because of advances in imaging technology.

Researchers studied the health data of people from Olmsted County from 1984 to 2012 who had kidney stones present for the first time.

Researchers found symptomatic kidney stones are becoming more common in both men and women.

The highest increase was in women aged 18 to 39.

Most of them were suffering from urinary tract infections.
