Overnight agreement prevents St. Paul teachers' strike

St. Paul, Minn. (AP) -

Teachers in St. Paul were prepared to go on strike Tuesday, but their union and St. Paul Public Schools reached an agreement on a new contract at 2  a.m. Monday.

The tentative deal averts Tuesday's strike and comes after seven consecutive days of mediation.

The 2-year contract includes all three bargaining units including 3,200 teachers, educational assistants and professional staff.

So far no details have been made public about the agreement.

The district said it couldn't afford the 2.5% raises the union wanted. Meanwhile, the union didn't support the district pushing for larger class sizes.
