Jury convicts man of lesser charges in Iowa City shootings

Posted: Updated:

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A jury has convicted a man of voluntary manslaughter in a shooting on the Iowa City pedestrian mall that left one person dead and two others injured.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the jury Wednesday found Lamar C. Wilson guilty of voluntary manslaughter, two counts of assault with the intent to inflict serious injury and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors had asked jurors to convict Wilson of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

Wilson didn't deny he fired five bullets on the crowded pedestrian mall about 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 27. The shots killed 22-year-old Kaleek Jones and injured Xavier Hicks and D'Andre Hicks.

Wilson argued he fired the shots in self-defense, saying his life was endangered.

He will be sentenced later.
