It's been somewhat of a frustrating senior season for Byron girl's hoops sensation Ayoka Lee.
The 6'5" Center has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury all year, causing her to miss 10 games.
"The most difficult part has been, making sure I'm ready to comeback, just feeling confident that my ankle is ready. I think it's definitely helped us grow a lot as a team and I think it will definitely help us during the playoffs and in the long run," said Lee.
Despite all the adversity this season has brought, her coach says she's been handling it well.
"Ayoka is such a leader on the floor, she's been a captain for two years for us. When she's on the floor her communication is and we missed that a little bit when she wasn't out there on the floor. Obviously besides her offensive and defensive presence, we missed her leadership out there and her communication out there, but even those games she was out on the bench she's out communicating, she's talking to kids as they're coming out for timeouts. She's such a great kid and a great leader for us," said Byron Head Coach, Darren Nelson.
Last week Lee posted an impressive triple-double in win against Lourdes, registering 32 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks.
"It's just amazing, just a monster night. She's just such a game changer down there, both on the offensive end and defensive end," added Nelson.
In that game Lee also surpassed 2,000 career points.
"It's exciting.. definitely thankful and grateful I could share it with my teammates and family. I didn't know how many points I was away.. my teammates had kind of hinted to me, but I wasn't for sure that I'd get it until the second half.. and our crowd was cheering a ton and I was like okay. I didn't really know what was gonna.. I wasn't for sure it was gonna happen this game," said Lee.
Byron Bears Center Ayoka Lee is this week's KTTC Newscenter Sports Athlete of the Week.
