ST. JAMES, Minn. (AP) -

Investigators say the assistant police chief of the southern Minnesota city of St. James shot and killed a knife-wielding man after she and two other officers were unable to subdue him with Tasers.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says Assistant Chief Rochelle Hanson fired the shots that killed 20-year-old Gilberto Salas inside a convenience store Wednesday. The other officers involved were identified late Friday as State Trooper Jacob Ruppert and Sgt. Barry Gulden of the Watonwan County Sheriff's Office.

The BCA says its preliminary investigation found that Salas was driving a stolen car when he led officers on a chase that reached speeds of 120 miles an hour before they broke off the pursuit. Officers caught up with him at a St. James convenience store, where the fatal confrontation ensued.
