Man fatally shot by police in St. James Wednesday identified

Posted:
ST. JAMES, Minn (KTTC) -

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says 20-year-old Gilberto Salas of Gaylord was shot inside Casey's General Store in St. James.

The release of the victim's name comes after the American Civil Liberties Union told reporters who he was and demanded transparency.

The ACLU is also asking for the name of the officer who shot Salas, the surveillance video from the store and critical details of the incident.

The BCA says Nicollet County Sheriff's deputies spotted a stolen vehicle in LaFayette and gave chase, along with six other law enforcement agencies.

They broke off the pursuit but Salas was later spotted by St. James police who gave chase.

The BCA says Salas ran into the Casey's store and hid in an office.

Several officers fired stun guns several times, and then one officer opened fire with his gun.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner says Salas died from multiple gunshot wounds.
