City hosts open house on major changes coming to Broadway Avenue in the coming years

With all of the growth expected in Rochester in the coming years, one of the most important challenges to tackle is transit.

The city is currently looking at 6 plans to enhance parts of Broadway Ave North.

All of these plans are focusing on the area between Civic Center Drive and the bridge over Silver Lake at 13th Street.

The hope is to enhance and update the roads, along with making it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Current projections show more that 20 thousand people using that stretch of road a day, only increasing in the coming years with Destination medical center.

Another focus of the plan is to try and beautify the area.

However one major part of the project is setting the stage for a new form of transportation for the city.

"So this is going to be the first phase of really implementing that bus rapid transit system over the entirety of Broadway avenue," Aaron Warford, one of the consultants with Bolton and Menk helping the redesign, said. "So we will be looking to construct what we're calling kind of a Hub Transit Station for bus rapid transit while still maintaining the local service lines and the local stops. We are gonna look to develop a transit hub for future bus rapid transit as part of this project."

The city and consultants here are looking to get as much public feedback as possible to make sure the work fits in with what people need.

Construction is slated to start, with whatever plan they choose, in mid 2019.
