Minnesota Department of Public Safety announces text to 911 service

There's a new service to help keep Minnesotans safe in an emergency.

Tuesday, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety hosted a news conference at the University of Minnesota Public Safety Emergency Communications Center.

Leaders announced new statewide text to 911 service in Minnesota.       

The change will be especially be helpful for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech impairment.

The service, which is available beginning Tuesday, is the result of three years of work.

911 dispatchers have trained on the new system and tested it, as well.
