Athlete of the Week - Owen King

CALEDONIA, Minn. (KTTC) -

Caledonia Quarterback Owen King is the kid with the golden arm. In three years as the starting quarterback for Caledonia, King has yet to lose a game. He's won two state titles, and is playing for a third on Friday. What would it mean to King to win a third straight state title at Caledonia?

"It would mean everything. We just want to go out on top because of all the hard work we've put in. We're going to try as hard as we can."

King is one of the best football players -- if not the best -- in all of Minnesota. His stats as a 3-year-starter are mind boggling: nearly 8,000 passing yards, 129 passing touchdowns, 23 rushing touchdowns, and just 12 interceptions.

Head coach Carl Fruechte said how much he appreciates having King, "It's a blessing. He's awesome. He's just done a tremendous job. The thing I appreciate most about Owen is how much he cares about his teammates. It's not about him-- he just wants to win."

In addition to being a gifted football player, King is also an incredible basketball player who will hit the hardwood next year for South Dakota State University. He's known that was the sport he wanted to play at the next level since before he ever started a game at quarterback for the Warriors.

Fruechte told us, "I remember before his sophomore year, brought him over to the house. We actually talked about what their [Owen and his brother Noah] dreams were, what their passions were, and his first love is basketball, but he still cares deeply about football. He wanted to play college basketball. I said, 'Great, that's what we want you to do. Don't worry about people telling you that you gotta do football,' and I think that was, in my humble opinion, a stress reliever for Owen."

King agreed, "Yeah, there's a lot of people... you just gotta stick with your close family and friends. Just know that you're doing what you want to do, and if people try to convince you otherwise, that's what they think -- which is fine -- but you gotta do what you gotta do."

Despite being the best player on his team, King is a humble, hard-working kid who doesn't play for himself.

"When one of your best players isn't concerned about stats, isn't concerned about those selfish things, that's what we want our Caledonia athlete to be. He's just a great example of that" Fruechte said.
