Athlete of the Week - Alex Folz

The Spring Grove Lions defeated Verndale by four touchdowns Friday night, earning their first ever trip to U.S. Bank Stadium, and returning to the state semifinals for the first time since 2003. Leading the charge for the Lions was junior signal-caller Alex Folz, accounting for four touchdowns in the 34-6 win. Folz gave his thoughts on the victory,

"I remember the last team -- 2003 -- to be in there. I was just a little kid, but it means a lot to this team and to the town. It's a good feeling to get back there, and have a good chance at winning it as well."

The Lions have relied heavily on their quarterback the last two weeks, with Folz setting career highs in carries and yards in the section championship game, and then rushing for 219 yards and 4 touchdown's on Friday, in addition to passing for 155 yards.

Head coach Zach Hauser said, "when it's win or go home, you're going to try to get the ball in your best playmaker's hands, and Alex has stepped up and he's got it done the last few weeks."

Folz has made plays for the Lions all year, but in the state quarterfinals, he bested them all. Just after a goal line stand, Folz took simple run play 98 yards to the house to cement the lions victory.

"Definitely the best play of my career. Definitely the most tiring run, for sure. And for it to come at a big stage like that, it made it all even more special."

"Giving Alex a chance, he's going to make plays. That's what he does best" Hauser said.

However, Folz and the Lions still have one big goal on their mind, and they are determined to succeed.

"It would be nice to bring a championship here. The fans, they deserve it. They're such great fans. I think it would be a great thing to bring a championship to them."
