NEAR LA CRESCENT, Minn. (KTTC) -

Authorities have released dash cam video of an officer-involved shooting and high-speed chase in Houston County that landed two Wisconsin teens behind bars.

According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, it all started around 1:30 a.m. on July 31, when two La Crescent police officers saw then 19-year-old Wyatt Helfrich (now 20), of La Crosse, Wis., acting suspiciously at a Kwik Trip. After Helfrich got into a car with 19-year-old William Wallraff, of Holmen, Wis., they were pulled over at Highway 26 and Highway 16 south of La Crescent for allegedly speeding.

The BCA says as Officer Ryan Quanrud approached Helfrich and Wallraff's vehicle, Helfrich fired at the officer.

Officer Quanrud and Officer Christopher Frick returned fire and ran back to their squad cars. Investigators say the two teens then sped off and continued shooting at the police cars during the chase.

Spike strips were deployed on Highway 44 and the teens' car finally came to a stop near Caledonia. The BCA says the teens then ran into a nearby cornfield while still carrying their weapons. But just minutes later, they surrendered.

Photos from the BCA show that a rifle and shotgun were found in the cornfield.

None of the officers were hurt.

Wallraff was also not hurt. But the BCA says Helfrich suffered superficial injuries.

During an interview with investigators, Helfrich claimed he was trying to move his shotgun during the traffic stop when it was fired accidentally.

Nevertheless, he and Wallrath were each charged with seven felonies, including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree assault and fleeing a police officer. The two remain in jail.

According to the La Crosse Tribune, the Winona County attorney has determined the officers' use of force was justified.
