Rochester Public Transportation route change has neighbors concerned about losing their stop

A bus route on the city's north side could be changed permanently, after a long-term detour has shown signs of success.

Rochester Public Transportation is considering changing Route 19, which goes from the downtown area to a neighborhood near 55th street Northwest.

The original route was forced into a detour with construction on 55th Street, but now that construction is over, RPT is proposing to change the route altogether, that is a hybrid of the old route and the detour route.

Transportation officials hosted a public input session this evening to gauge the bus riders thoughts on the new route and to see how they would like to see the route be changed.

The new proposed route extends out further west than before, but also cuts off its route through 57th street NW, which caused a sour reaction from some members of the community in attendance.

"The hybrid that was initially proposed today or at least revealed today didn't have one particular street on it and there has been a lot of riders that I've noticed on that particular street. So it'd be a shame to see them get squeezed out with that kind of change," said Jeremy Vold, a rider of RPT's Route 19.

RPT says Ridership for Route 19 increased significantly when the construction detour began in June 2016.
