Operation Christmas Child underway

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -

Collection week is officially underway for Operation Christmas Child.

Calvary Evangelical Free Church on 25th Avenue NW serves as a collection site for the annual effort.

Samaritan's Purse organizes the project and allows children in some of the world's poorest areas to enjoy a shoebox filled with presents just for them.

This year, organizers are requesting a $9 donation per box to handle shipping costs. Also, no candy or toothpaste this year due to customs regulations.

For some children, this is the first time anyone has gifted them with Christmas Cheer.

Gwen Carlson, the Rochester Collection Center Coordinator, says "For some of these children the shoe box gift is the first gift they've ever received and they know that someone loves them and the shoe boxes bring joy and hope."

You can drop off your shoe box at the church from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this week, and noon to 2 p.m. on the weekend.

The final boxes will be accepted next Monday.
