Curling Club of Rochester kicks off inaugural league

The Curling Club of Rochester kicked off its inaugural league Sunday night at the Rec Center.

Teams gathered at the North Rink at 7 p.m. to learn curling techniques before facing off. More games will be played every Sunday at 7 p.m. through Dec. 17.

There are 24 curlers in the league, plus substitutes. Organizers hope to begin another league in January, possibly with expanded times to allow more players.

"For me, curling was really -- it's a community where I feel like I belong or I feel like I can be myself," said Kelsey Schuder, president of the Curling Club of Rochester. "I can hang out with people that I really like. I can spend time on the ice getting to know them. And I can spend time off the ice after we're done curling getting to know them further. And it's a very collaborative sport. Any shot is either made or missed by the team collectively and not necessarily just by the person throwing the stone."

If you are interested in the league, visit The club also offers training and social events.

Schuder believes the last time Rochester had a curling league was around 2002.
