HAYFIELD, Minn. (KTTC) -

With Veterans Day coming up, Hayfield Elementary students honored those who served by performing a popular patriotic song Thursday morning.

Led by music teacher Liz Fjerstad, the students sang “My Name Is America," written by Hayfield High School graduate Kurt Orning. The song has about 1.6 million views on YouTube alone.

The students sang the song at Hayfield High School's west gym in front of local veterans. Click on the video player above to view the performance.

"We love our veterans and that they fought for our country," said third-grader Emma Matzek. "They just love to hear kids sing about their country."

"It helps us honor them and respect them," fellow student Jordyn Knudson added. "We're really, really, really enthusiastic when it gets to the loud parts [of the song]."

Veterans who watched the performance included Jerry Nelson, who served in the Army.

"I thought they did an excellent job," said Nelson. "We're very proud of them here in Hayfield."

Fjerstad said Thursday's performance taught a valuable lesson for her students.

"Our country at times is in a divisive state, and I think it's important for our kids to know that even when we have differences, this is something that unites us," she said.
